The composition of this shot is amazing!! The girls in the upper corner and the mud on the lower corner, it makes the image look split as if they're opposing forces meeting in a grand(and hilarious) battle. They look so serious and yet they're still having fun. It makes me smile! And the colours are just dark enough that the white border looks amazing with the image. The size of the border you chose, and the vibrance of the colours present without being too over-the-top really makes this a fun piece as well.
For a mid-action photo with so much noise and so many things going on at what is an actual, live event, I can't imagine there being a better backdrop for it, either! The purple behind them makes the image complete without taking away from what is happening and it matches the purple on the girl's headband. Not to mention the shades of yellow complimenting the brown, and the shades of green and orange complimenting each other throughout the image. It looks so coincidentally colour coordinated it's perfect! There is a bit of motion blur going on with the edges and that, aside from the lack of eyes present in the image (although it would be a bad idea to dive headfirst into a pool of mud with your eyes open, I imagine!) are possibly the only things I'm not fond of with this shot. But in terms of the category 'photo journalism' and 'sports', I think you've perfectly captured the spirit of this whole event and that's what it's all about, so congratulations on your well-earned Daily deviation!!
Thanks for the critique! It was a really fun event to shoot. There was plenty of other fun to shoot throughout the day, but as soon as I saw the first entrants splash into the mud at the end of the race I knew that's where I wanted to be. Glad you enjoyed it!
did they throw the mud on them or do they jump in it? i can't reconstruct it from the image and i'm very curious about the situation, your picture was taken it looks so cool. just the right moment, angle and light
